How Usain Bolt Can Help You Achieve Your Dreams

Would you like to know the things that separates people like Usain Bolt from the average?
I mean, this chap is unbelievable.
Sure, he has a physical advantage nobody can touch right now.
But he’s not the only athlete performing at an unbelievable level.
Yet some athletes seem to fall at the ‘final hurdle’.
They storm the heats, semis and then crumble in the final.
There are all sorts of reasons why that happens.
BUT, Michael Johnson’s commentary on BBC2 revealed something which I’ve known and used for years.
Something which true superstars like him and Usain use to ensure they perform at their peak!
And it’s all about preparation (as if you didn’t know that).
Here’s what Michael Johnson said (not his exact words but you’ll get the gist) about what the difference in preparation between those who run perform their best in the finals and those who don’t…
“Before the race some athletes will think about the ‘GLORY’ of winning. The sponsorship they’ll get, the press coverage, the MONEY. Some will ‘WORRY’ about tripping, false starting, being beaten…
BUT, USAIN BOLT, the best athletes will do neither of those.
Usain will be RUNNING THE PERFECT RACE IN HIS MIND. Over and over again. He’ll replay the perfect start, the perfect drive, the perfect finish. And he’ll picture it in perfect detail. He’ll KNOW his every move, his every step, exactly what he’ll do in the race.”
And guess what happens in the race?
He runs it pretty much exactly as he visualises it.
Pretty weird huh??
Well… Whether you think it’s weird or not - it IS proven to work. Time and time again.
And YOU can use EXACTLY the same technique to achieve whatever YOU want for your business and your life.
You see, our world has a strange habit of reflecting our thoughts.
Think good things, good things tend to happen.
Think bad things, bad things tend to happen.
Create your perfect future in your mind in perfect detail and replay it to yourself A LOT and and that perfect future will have more than a little chance of coming true…

The SIMPLE Path to Business Success

What a weekend.
Sunny, hot, barbecues and relaxation.
Fantastic.
I hope you had a great weekend too.
Over the weekend I spent a little time filtering through all the different options we as business owners have to attract and keep customers.
And there are MORE than ever.
Just tons and tons of them.
In fact, there are SO many it’s often difficult to decide WHAT to do next.
So - I’m gonna simplify things for you a lot!
There are ONLY 3 things you need to do.
1. Attract more customers.
2. Get each one spending more.
3. Get each one referring more people.
That’s it.
Nothing more.
Now, the ‘tools’ you choose to use to grow your business MUST do one or a combination of those 3 things.
If they don’t - don’t spend your time on them.
The secret is to use as many different strategies as you can to do those 3 things.
AS LONG AS THEY WORK!
And that sentence there is the clincher.
So how do you know if they work?
Well, you MUST get an accurate measurement of at LEAST the following TWO statistics.
How MUCH it costs you to get a new customer. Whether that’s from direct mail, the internet, press releases, face to face, the telephone, ads, yellow pages, Twitter etc, etc.
AND you must work out your AVERAGE LIFETIME CUSTOMER SPEND.
Now, as long as the amount it costs you to acquire a new customer is less than the your average lifetime spend… Guess what…
It makes YOU MONEY!
So keep doing it - and if you can - do MORE of it!
The BIG problem most businesses have and the reason they feel their advertising and marketing doesn’t ‘pay off’ is because.
a. They don’t know these numbers.
and…
b. They don’t spend any time trying to improve them!
And that is WHY you should ONLY use direct response marketing.
So when you spend a pound, you KNOW how much you get back.
Think how much it would be if you knew with certainty that if you spent £1000 on marketing you’s get £3000 back!
What fun!
And how easy would it be to walk all over your competition??

Is Wolfram the Secret to Business Success?

I’ve been a little quiet over the last week or so.
‘Eat Your Own Medicine Henry’ has been on the top of my mind for a few weeks.
And I have.
Every once in a while I head off on a MISSION to see what’s happening in the world of marketing, see what’s changing and see what’s REALLY worth spending time on.
The number of NEW options is astonishing.
And the rate of introduction of new options is increasing!
Yesterday a brand new type of search engine was released “Wolfram Alpha”.
I spent 30 minutes or so on there last night trying to figure out just how useful it is. I’m sure I’m missing something but besides calculating the distance from Bournemouth to Dubai and convert KM into miles I couldn’t figure out how it could help us.
Then I got confused.
For a brief millisecond my brain turned to jelly and everything got the better of me.
Everywhere I turned I found another ‘whizz-bang’ marketing option. Another social ‘fad’, another internet ‘gimmick’.
And OVERLOAD set in.
How could I possibly make sense of all the new marketing options available now and those about to hit us over the next few years?
How could I turn them into something that makes money for YOU and for me?
I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and reflected.
Reflected on what’s really important.
Reflected on what REALLY gets people to TRUST YOU.
Reflected on what REALLY gives you the ability to build a LONG TERM business.
And like a white dove descending through the clouds in a stream of sunlight I had clarity.
Everything Was Crystal Clear Again
And the ’secret’ is simple.
And I KNOW you will agree.
The secret is ‘COMMUNICATION’.
That’s ALL that matters.
It makes no odds whether that’s via a letter, a postcard, an email, on a blog, on Twitter, Facebook or whatever.
99% of the emails I receive, the letters I get in the post, the ‘Twits’ I get on Twitter are just HORRIBLY badly written.
The people sending them have put about as much thought and effort into REAL COMMUNICATION as I put into reading them (i.e. virtually none).
And therefore their marketing FAILS.
And it fails over and over and over again.
They spend hours sending emails, hours writing letters, endless time on Facebook, Twitter, in forums and on and on. And get LOUSY, STINKING results.
Here’s a MUCH better path to choose.
Become a WORLD CLASS communicator and MASTER a small number of marketing tools.
Then beat your competition over the head with them for years and years and years…

Will this IDEA Change Your Life Too?
Posted by: | CommentsMy first real job (I was a lazy teenager) post university was with IBM - in sales.
I had NO sales experience, was and still am (inside, although I’ve used various techniques to beat it) a shy, quiet, thoughful person - not a brash extrovert with a big enough ego to offend Simon Cowell.
Thrown into a ‘pit’ of highly trained ’sales tigers’ I was completely out of my depth.
My first few weeks comprised of me spending about 50% of my time on the loo, 20% pretending to do stuff and 30% having completely pointless calls with people who had no idea what I’d called for (side-note: even back then I should have realised I was ‘unemployable’…).
Not a good place to be.
And I knew I was under the stopwatch to pick up my act and get things sorted - or, I’d be out of a job, had lost a great opportunity and my Dad would be more than a little displeased (having spent his working life battling to give us opportunities he’d never had).
But I simply didn’t know what to do.
Then, one afternoon I was sat in the loo (at work), reading a newspaper and an idea popped into my head (and quite frankly I have no idea why I hadn’t thought of it before; but when you’re as out of your depth as I was, you kinda don’t know your ‘ass’ from your ‘elbow’).
The idea was - why don’t I teach myself to sell!
SHHAAAABBBLAMMMM!
I know, I know…
Not rocket science.
But as a young man full of deluded bravado, and a mountain of misguided pretend confidence I thought ‘I knew it all’.
So… I headed off to the book shop…
And picked up a book by Tom Hopkins and a book by Zig Ziglar.
I devoured them cover to over that night.
Brilliant!
And drafted a sales system I could use to start creating real interest in what I was selling.
First stage of that was to call people and get their interest.
So… I wrote a script to do just that.
And it went something like this (and by all means copy it and adapt it - it works like gangbusters).
“Hi, this is Henry Baker, I’m calling from my office in Portsmouth.”
“I see like myself, you are interested in using computer technology to increase your companies profits and reduce your costs.”
“Let me ask you a question… If I can honestly show you a way to double the value of each of customers by knowing who are your best clients, how much they spend, on what, how often and how much it cost you to get them - would that be worth 45 minutes of your time?”
At the time, I was calling small to medium business owners who I knew had little in the way of computing power…
And the script worked a charm (there’s more to it than that bit).
I went from the worst appointment maker in the whole place to the best in about 14 days!
And within a year I was winning competitions left right and centre, training other people and had generated over over £7mill in revenue.
And those early results set me on a path I have never strayed from. A path of constant exposure, constant learning from people inside my industry and OUTSIDE my industry.
But enough about me.
This is the single most profitable thing you can do.
And I mentioned the ‘word’ above.
And the word is: IDEAS
IDEAS are the fruits of your thinking. But they’ve got to be harnessed and put to work to have value.
Each year an oak tree produces enough acorns to populate a good sized forest. Yet from these seeds perhaps one or two acorns will become a tree. The squirrels destroy most of them and the hard ground beneath the tree doesn’t give the others much chance.
And so it is with ideas. Very few bear fruit. Ideas are highly perishable. If you’re not on-guard from the squirrels (negative thinking people and your own negative thoughts) will destroy them. Ideas require special handling from the time they are born until they are transformed into practical ways for doing things.
Use these 3 ideas to harness and develop ideas:
1. CAPTURE THEM. Earl Nightingale said “Ideas are like slippery fish. If you don’t ’spear’ them with a pencil they will escape.” Ideas will come to you at all sorts of times. They’ll just ‘pop’ into your head when driving, having a shower, a beer or wherever. BUT, they don’t last long. If you don’t record them your mind WILL forget them. Keep a notebook with you at all times and WRITE them down. If you don’t, the fruits of your thinking will disappear…
2. Next, review your ideas. Store them where you can find them. If you only create ONE idea a day, within a year you will have more ideas than mot people record in a lifetime… Review your ideas… You NEVER know when just ONE will change your life.
3. Fertilise your ideas. Now make your ideas grow. Think about them, attach them to other ideas. Read everything you can about your ideas. Discuss your ideas with other. And when the time is right, put them to work in your business and your life.
And be sure of this.
Ideas arise when you are exposed to new thinking, new people, things outside your comfort zone. People NOT in your industry, people who have SOLVED your problems before.
Attaching yourself to other people will similar goals and dreams as you acts as the fire to create the SPARKS of new ideas you can use to benefit your clients, yourself, your family and friends.
You need to rub shoulders with other success hungry people. Associate with people outside your core interests - doing so will illuminate the BIG picture.

Are You as Dumb as a Wombat?
Posted by: | CommentsOne of my favourite mentors once told me “If you don’t offend someone every day, you’re not trying hard enough”.
When I first heard him say that I was a little kinda ’shocked’.
Offend people - how’s that gonna help?
Surely I’ll just alienate the people I want to attract as clients.
But interestingly, that is not the case.
And let me just make something clear… I don’t mean running around screaming obscentities, shouting abuse, whacking in the ‘F’ word left right and center or calling people fat, skinny, bald, ugly, poor, stuck-up, stupid, ignorant, arrogant, slow, dumb, weird or a failure (as much as I’d often like too).
Rather it’s a method of ‘pushing the boundaries’ and connecting with people beyond all the cr*p (there ya go…) that’s floating all around us.
It’s really a case of ‘If you’ve got something to say’, then ’say it’ (or do it).
Quite honestly on a few occasions it has come back and ‘taken a big chunk outta my butt’. But a little wry smile, an apology and a determination to move on always pops that back to bed.
And this idea of not be afraid to say something different, do something different is ESSENTIAL to your success.
WHY?
Well, we’re all deeply entrenched in a pit of FEAR.
FEAR of failure, fear of success, fear of poor health, fear of old age and a whole bunch more.
Busting out of that entrapment releases the shackles and like 3 pounds of TNT under the toilet can zip you skyward at warp speed.
But there’s something I consider EVEN worse than FEAR.
One thing which holds more people back from BIG strides forward than anything else.
And it’s a PET hate of mine.
If you wanna ‘wind me up’ - if I ever say something to offend you - if you ever fancy a little ‘pop’ at me - then send me all your frickin’ EXCUSES as to why you can’t take action on the things I impart to you.
- You can ‘tdo that…
- That won’t work.
- You’re not allowed to do that.
- Nobody will respond to that.
- I’m not clever enough to do that.
- I’m too old to do that.
- I’m not healthy enough to do that.
AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Stop it!
Any lame assed, small thinking schmuck can come up with an endless list of why something can’t be done.
That’s really easy… Pitiful… Shameful…
The REAL power, the REAL path to success, the REAL way to switch on your afterburner and jump to warp speed is to take all the ideas I and others give you and then work out how you CAN APPLY THEM!!!
There’s always a way!
Did you know that Walt Disney was fired by the editor of a newspaper for ‘lacked imagination and had no good ideas’? Did you know he was ridiculed over his idea for a theme park?
Any average person would have dumped his dream at the side of a road, jumped back into line and waddled his way through the rest of his life as inconspicuous as a Ford Mondeo.
So… Where do you sit?
Are you an excuse ridden ‘wombat’ who is quite happy to meander through their day blinkered to anything but what you know, you understand, you trust?
Or are you like Walt Disney - prepared to take the reigns, embrace fear, eliminate excuses and suck up all the ideas you can from outside you comfort zone, chop ‘em, twist em’, tweak them and then fire on all cylinders like a 6.4 litre V12 Lamborghini Murcielago and get them pumping in your business and life NOW???

3 Easy Ways You Can Beat Falling ‘Footfall’

And I bet if you are in a local town that your footfall has been falling for about the last year??
Why?
Well…
Figures released by Experian today, show High Street footfall fell by 1.7% last year. Some areas saw falls as high as 7%+. Many local towns are becoming ‘ghost towns’ with empty units and few shoppers.
Businesses that rely soley on ‘footfall’ to generate new clients need to make changes
In good times this is often an adequate way to earn a decent income. But now ‘footfall’ is falling fast, if you want to survive need to use some new strategies.
Here are 3 ways you can take positive action to beat falling ‘footfall’.
- 1. Use Direct Marketing to Attract Affluent Clients - There are plenty of people spending money, plenty of people little affected by recession. By using direct marketing you can target specific affluent demographics with ‘pinpoint’ accuracy and either sell directly to them or use irresistible offers to invite them intoyour business. Direct marketing allows precise measurement of results and thus minimal waste.
- 2. Make More Use of the Internet - While High Street sales are falling, online sales are rising in many categories. ANY business owner can easily use the internet to both sell online (as an additional route to market) and use the internet as part of a coordinated demand generation system for new and old clients.
- 3. Utilise Joint Venture Partnerships - A lot of small business (and large) are feeling the pinch from recession. And while in good times many are happy to ‘keep themselves to themselves’, now is the time to develop partnerships with other local business for mutual gain. For example, you could could approach a local gym and ask to run a marketing campaign to their members. They gym could benefit either through a slice of profits or by a campaign to your clients.
So… While High Street footfall is falling, you really have two simple choices.
Either get very, very busy finding new ways to generate business or ‘roll over’ and ‘give up’.
‘Giving up’ should not be an option…

The Fastest Way to Grow Your Business in 2009

Let me explain…
When the jewellery store owner becomes a marketer of fine jewellery, the carpet cleaner becomes a marketer of carpet cleaning services, the chiropractor a marketer of chiropractic care, etc., she takes a quantum leap up ability to beat recession and increase her income.
To beat recession, small business owners like you should stop making the mistake of being doers and start being marketers.
Most service business owners, small business owners, self-employed professionals and consultants all view themselves as doers of what they do.
The marketer sees the acquisition, retention and value maximization of the customers as her primary role, with the doing of the service the necessary ‘evil’. Simply, marketers are much more valuable and highly paid than others.
This is very difficult for doers to accept.
When you attend a networking meeting, at least 80% of everybody’s conversation is about doing, not the marketing; in the cocktail lounge, people tell each other what they do… ‘I speak about X, I’m an expert in Y.’ If you ask most businesspeople what they do, they’ll define themselves as a doer of a thing rather than as a marketing of a thing.
This attitude or view of who you are has an enormous impact on how you allocate your time and energy.
The doers of things do those things and get around to marketing if there’s “time left over.”
In recession this is the exact opposite of how time should be allocated.
The smart business owner spends most of her time marketing her products and services, attracting, nurturing and growing clients.
It is infinitely easier to delegate the doing than the marketing.
There are plenty of doers who are terrible at marketing. There are very few good marketers and yet they are the ones with all the business…
