The SIMPLE Path to Business Success

What a weekend.
Sunny, hot, barbecues and relaxation.
Fantastic.
I hope you had a great weekend too.
Over the weekend I spent a little time filtering through all the different options we as business owners have to attract and keep customers.
And there are MORE than ever.
Just tons and tons of them.
In fact, there are SO many it’s often difficult to decide WHAT to do next.
So - I’m gonna simplify things for you a lot!
There are ONLY 3 things you need to do.
1. Attract more customers.
2. Get each one spending more.
3. Get each one referring more people.
That’s it.
Nothing more.
Now, the ‘tools’ you choose to use to grow your business MUST do one or a combination of those 3 things.
If they don’t - don’t spend your time on them.
The secret is to use as many different strategies as you can to do those 3 things.
AS LONG AS THEY WORK!
And that sentence there is the clincher.
So how do you know if they work?
Well, you MUST get an accurate measurement of at LEAST the following TWO statistics.
How MUCH it costs you to get a new customer. Whether that’s from direct mail, the internet, press releases, face to face, the telephone, ads, yellow pages, Twitter etc, etc.
AND you must work out your AVERAGE LIFETIME CUSTOMER SPEND.
Now, as long as the amount it costs you to acquire a new customer is less than the your average lifetime spend… Guess what…
It makes YOU MONEY!
So keep doing it - and if you can - do MORE of it!
The BIG problem most businesses have and the reason they feel their advertising and marketing doesn’t ‘pay off’ is because.
a. They don’t know these numbers.
and…
b. They don’t spend any time trying to improve them!
And that is WHY you should ONLY use direct response marketing.
So when you spend a pound, you KNOW how much you get back.
Think how much it would be if you knew with certainty that if you spent £1000 on marketing you’s get £3000 back!
What fun!
And how easy would it be to walk all over your competition??

1 Billion Reasons to Build a Marketing …xxxx…???

“SYSTEM”
One of the pivotal reasons W Clement Stone was able to build a $1billion business despite the Great Depression was that he created a SYSTEM.
A system for attracting prospects, a system for presenting value, a system for closing, AND a system for training and motivating his thousands of salesmen…
And therein ALSO lies the reason so many people say:
“Online Marketing Is a Waste of Time, Offline Marketing Is Dead”
They lack any structure, any system for implementation and measurement of marketing.
It’s no surprise a website does nothing if it’s thrown into cyberspace by a web agency who knows little more than what you do and what your company name is and is then left there to it’s own devices.
It’s no wonder direct mail fails if you sen out one ‘glossy’, ‘offer lacking’ flyer, don’t measure response and don’t follow up.
It’s no wonder a salesman returns to the office with an empty order book if he was sent to cold prospects and has all the sales process on his shoulders.
It’s no wonder new customers leave if once they’ve bought something they never hear from you again until you want them to buy something else…
And YES, I know there are endless, endless, endless different marketing tools out there and more and more seemingly every single day.
I mean, who can resist the lure of FACEBOOK as a marketing tool, TWITTER as the ultimate list builder…
Trouble IS, do they work?
Well?
Do they?
I’ll tell you this much… They WILL NEVER replace all the other marketing tools in your kit-bag…
So - Where Are You Now?
Do you have a few disparate marketing tools all kinda independent, used ‘willy-nilly’ in a ‘hope-for-the-best’ kind of way?
Do you have a couple of things that work but don’t really know why?

Online Marketing is a Waste of Time, Offline Marketing Doesn’t Work

70 odd years ago there were really only a handful of ways a small business owner could attract business.
- - Face to face
- - Newspapers
- - Magazines
- - Publicity
- - Signs
- - Events
- - Direct mail
And a few more.
Yet W.Clement Stone (if you don’t have his book entitles “The Success System that Never Fails” then get it) built a $1billion insurance business from scratch in the GREAT DEPRESSION!
Nowadays there are endless ways for you to attract business. All of those methods above, tons more offline methods and so many online methods you could bury yourself in them for a lifetime and still come up dazed and confused about what works and what doesn’t.
And that brings me onto yet another subscribers comment:
“Online marketing is a waste of time, offline marketing doesn’t work!’…
I’m in a good mood today so I won’t swear (unlike Didier Drogba after Barcelona booted Chelsea out the Champions League) - but what a LAME excuse for being LAZY.
And for this chap I bet they don’t work - because his mind is locked away in a dark room shielding him from trying ’stuff’ just in case he fails.
We ALL fail - it’s part of succeeding.
But this article isn’t about that.
This is article is about:
If W Clement Stone can build a billion dollar business from scratch in the Great Depression with nothing more than ‘blood sweat and tears’ - why in this day and age do so many struggle.
I mean, we have so many options for attracting clients and so many options for keeping in contact with them, adding value and increasing their life-time spend.
Here’s an insight into part of the problem.
We do have endless ways to attract clients online and offline.
BUT, because of the speed of change, the speed at which new things arrive MOST businesses have ended up with a BIG PILE of jumbled up marketing strategies and means for attracting and keeping clients that it’s not only nearly impossible to know what works and what doesn’t BUT they all FIGHT each other rather than work in SYNC.
OR else, they are so ’scared’ of trying something new (maybe even just getting online) that just like the chap above they block out all options but what they’re used and slowly but surely get surpassed by competition and deserted by customers who expect more…
And W Clement Stone REVEALS the answer to this problem in the TITLE of his book…

End Procrastination - NOW!

“If you haven’t offended someone by midday each day”
Then you aren’t saying much.
And once again I don’t mean in a ‘horrid way’, personal way.
And it seems to have worked (and Sandra in Brisbane who used to live in Swanage, what I’m about to say isn’t directed at you).
Over the last few days I’ve had a 150% increase in the amount of emails I receive telling me ONE thing:
“Your spelling and grammar is bad”
YEP!
It often is…
And while of course spelling and grammar are important - if you read the emails I receive telling me my spelling and grammar is bad then you’d wet yourself at the state of theirs (ooo, I sound a bit bitter - sorry)…
But there is a MUCH BIGGER, more important issue here.
Every single day I get up between 4:45am and 5:30am and write 2, 3 sometimes as many as five articles between about 500 and 1000 words each.
Many are for magazines, newspapers etc and some are for my own websites etc.
When I tell people that, most are shocked.
Who wants to get up at the crack of dawn every day and write endless articles?
I ENJOY it…
I love stirring up ‘emotions’, getting people thinking, spilling my endless ramblings onto paper.
And when people say to me “Why the heck do you get up at 5am every day?”
My answer is simple…
“If you were going where I’m going you’d be up at 5am every single day!”
But getting back to spelling and grammar…
The speed and ferocity at which I hammer my thoughts into the keyboard means I DO make a lot of miss-types, ‘Queens English’ grammatical errors and more.
BUT, if I was to go back through each article with a fine tooth comb then my output would drop enormously.
That would lead to a significant drop in people asking for my help and a significant drop in my profits, happiness and attainment of my goals.
Fixing the spelling and grammar would REDUCE my profits!!! NOT increase them.
And that’s not ‘hocus-pocus’ - I know it’s true because I’ve tested it…
And herein lies today’s lesson.
TOO many people spend TOO long trying to get everything right.
Too long perfecting the pictures on their marketing material.
TOO long perfecting their new products.
TOO long ‘talking nonsense’ in meetings.
Unless you are cooking a private 5 course meal for the Queen in her kitchen in return for a ‘Knighthood’ (which I’d never do - the Queen is NOT high on my ‘need to know’ list) GOOD IS GOOD ENOUGH.
You are MUCH better off getting your marketing materials OUT to prospects fast and often, much better off getting new products into the market FAST before your competitors and so you CAN get feedback.
MUCH better off getting your new website done TODAY rather than waiting until every little piece is perfect.
And MUCH better off worrying about BIGGER, more IMPORTANT challenges than SPELLING and GRAMMAR.
IF your audience DEMANDS perfect spelling and grammar - and some do… Then guess what…
HIRE a proof reader or an English teacher… They are very cheap to hire…
Unlike me…
Don’t be ‘paralysed by perfection’. There is NOT enough time…
Get out there and make things happen - TODAY.

People LOVE to ‘get one over’… Love to ‘correct’ others… Love to feel superior… And love to work with REAL people - people that make mistakes… When people correct me it means a couple of things - 1. they have read my ’stuff’ 2. they have interacted with me… That wouldn’t happen anything like as often if I spent all day proofreading and correcting my mistakes.

Can These Four Words add 9% - 52%+ to Your Bottom Line?
Posted by: | CommentsYesterday my Mum and 3 of my brothers (I have 4) cruised over to Swanage for the day.
I was up at 5am, did a little reading and then got on with tidying the house, mowing the grass, getting the summer table and chairs out (re-assembling them - not my idea of fun) and getting the BBQ ready.
Once that was done, we hopped in the car, whipped open the roof and slid into the town to get some food.
That was at about 9:15am and as we parked in the town, Tracey and I looked at each other and said ‘Ah…Yeah…Shops don’t open ’till 10′…
Fortunately Subway has recently descended on Swanage and we’d yet to give it a try and it WAS open.
Having not tasted a delicious little morsel from there we decided to give it a try.
Sitting down in a fast-food restaurant and actually enjoying a meal is a distant memory for me.
Not because I don’t like the ’stuff’.
I love it… But my no longer taut waistline needs constant monitoring to keep it in check.
So as we sat their nibbling away on a shared foot-long stuffed full of Italian salami (yes, a weird breakfast choice - I know).
I got to thinking about how Subway had done so well.
They’re a franchise of course and the key to franchise success is a completely replicable model for everything from how the restaurant looks to how the food is prepared to how it is marketed, to WHAT THE STAFF SAY.
The reason McDonald’s is so much more successful than Burger King is not the food (few people willy deny a Whopper is ‘lovely stuff’ and a Big Mac is a bit ‘pappy’…).
Rather McDonald’s ’system’ is just much better.
How a company can take on a spotty teenager with raging hormones and little interest in anything but ‘head-banging’, ‘guitar hero’ and late nights in a dark, dank drinking establishment and turn them into a burger making demon that can pump out ‘Quarter Pounder With Cheese’s’ like our government can throw money at the economy and make each and every one exactly the same is simply astonishing.
And as I pondered McDonald’s I realised the lady who’d us served at Subway had made a mistake. Now, whether it was just she forgot or Subway don’t ask her to do this I don’t know (because I don’t have enough subs).
Here’s what I would have heard at McDonald’s:
“Would You Like That Super-Size”
Or something similar depending on what I’d ordered.
And keep in mind… It was about 9:20am, I’d been up since 5am and was gasping for a lovely bit a fresh coffee.
I didn’t order one because Tracey and I were too busy giggling about the ‘foot long’ joke and I was struggling to catch my breath.
BUT!!!
Had she just asked me “Would you like a drink with that?”
I would have said yes.
She would have taken another £1.50 or so and Subway would have increased their profits on my order by about 20%!
Not a lot on my little order.
But multiply that across the millions of foot longs these people sell and that and it’s big chunk of change.
And however you look at it - if all the outlets are not doing this then Subway are leaving a big boost in their profits on the table for someone else to grab.
Which is SILLY!
And you MUST do the same.
Between up-sell and cross-sell opportunities I bet there’s a additional 10% and maybe up to 50% in profits you could earn just by simply asking.
A hair salon could up-sell to the latest ’shampoo’. Could cross sell to make-up.
A car garage could up-sell to a valet or cross-sell to fancy audio/visual.
An online retailer to up-sell to FASTER shipping or cross-sell to a different product.
And on and on…
What you MUST realise is that the additional profit from an up-sell, cross-sell costs you NOTHING!!!
There is no additional cost in sale.
And EVEN better, when a customer has their wallet or purse out and are about to pay for something, this IS the time when their resistance to buying is LOWEST.
They’ve ready to give you more money…
Make SURE you and your staff ALWAYS, always, always offer an up-sell and or cross-sell…
Not doing so is ‘lazy’…
Doing so could be the MOST profitable thing you do all year…

How to Get Instant Online Credibility and FREE Perfect Website Traffic Forever

I am NOT an advocate on ONLY using online methods for generating leads, sales and referrals for ANY business.
Business owners who rely solely on the Internet are literally queuing up with with a ‘kick me’ sticker planted firmly on their backs.
Email deliver-ability is falling fast, regulation is creeping in more and more (which will actually be a good thing for businesses who follow my advice), surfers and BUYERS are becoming more and more ’savvy’ AND where there used to be the ability to sell online and yet remain ‘invisible’ and ‘immune’ to consumer feedback, social media means if you do something ‘dumb’ then half the frickin’ world can know about it in less than an hour.
And on top of that, history has shown media (and that’s all the Internet is) go from the most astonishing way to generate business to an ILLEGAL activity overnight (broadcast fax for example).
While I don’t think the Internet will ever become a defunct way to sell I DO 100% think that it will not be the ‘free fro all’, ‘gold rush’ many think it is now.
SO any business using only online methods should diversify offline NOW.
Not least because there is more money to be found and better customers to be found offline.
And equally, traditional bricks and mortar business who are not yet using the Internet at all or are not yet using it to generate real business are risking even more than those online business relying only on just so.
The KEY to successful LONG TERM online marketing (as with any marketing) is ‘positioning’.
You MUST position yourself in the mind of your prospects and clients as THE expert in what you do.
Feeble ‘brochure’ style websites won’t do that.
Endless ’squeeze’ pages won’t do that.
One page sales pages won’t do that.
Just being on Facebook won’t do that.
Just being on LinkedIn or any other networking site won’t do that.
Just sending endless sales emails will NOT do that.
You MUST switch yourself from the hunter to the HUNTED.
Power comes in any business when people seek YOU out.

How to Send Referrals Through the Roof

Are things going to pick up?
Well, according to the BBC this morning and a Bank of England report, banks are ‘getting ready’ to ‘free up credit’.
What does that mean??
Are there a whole bunch of pin strip suit wearing portly gentlemen with green visor hat wotsits sat at the ‘cages’ to an angry mob of credit which is bursting to escape and unleash another round of ‘Boom and Bust’ on us?
Or is it that those pin stripe wearing portly gents are sat in the smoking lounge of the Polo Club having a last G &T and a Cuban Cigar while they ‘Get Ready’ to free up credit?
Ridiculous…
And of course yesterday it was announced house prices rose in March.
Oh… Well… Woopeee s**t…
Whatever you do, do not start hoping, wishing dreaming for better times - or start thinking they are just around the corner.
Having spent a long time learning the ins and out of economics and the London School of Economics it’s my assertion that ‘NO ONE’ has got any earthly idea what the heck is going to happen.
AND IT DOESN’T MATTER.
All you need to focus on is what YOU can affect (and it ‘aint that bunch of hairy assed credit which has been caged up for the last 18 months).
Anyway, sorry… Little too much tea this morning.
Now back to the important stuff… Stuff which YOU control…
I’m always being asked:
“Henry - what FREE marketing strategies really work?”
Well, first off, FREE isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Why? Well, anyone can do FREE! if you want real POWER in your market you should be acquiring the MOST expensive customers — the ones NOBOBDY else will dare…
Anyway…
When it comes to FREE, the best marketing strategy, hands down, by far is of course REFERALLS!
Referred customers tend to be easier to sell to, less price resistant, more loyal and more likely to refer others. That makes them well worth going for.
Here’s a 4 step system to help you BOOST your referrals:
1. ASK - As we all know, ‘if you don’t ask, you won’t get’ and that is certainly true for referrals. Most customers are happy to provide referrals if the service has been good. And if it hasn’t, that needs to be fixed anyway. The best time to ask is immediately after a ‘happy’ purchase.
2. Set the Right Expectations - From the moment you acquire a new customer you should make it clear that you rely on referrals to keep your costs and prices down. To facilitate that you will be asking for referral contacts if they are happy with your service.
3. Reward - When you receive a referral make sure you go back the person who made it and give them a gift to thank them e.g. a box of chocolates, something you sell etc. This will both increase that person loyalty to you and make future referrals much more likely.
4. Follow Up - Once you have a new referral make sure you follow up with them quickly. Be sure to mention where you got there name (having asked if that’s OK), and give them something physical to pass on to other people. That may be vouchers, offer cards, sample etc. THIS IS WHERE MOST PEOPLE FAIL.
Pretty simple huh…
The key is to turn your referral program into a SYSTEM and make sure every one of your employees knows how to use the SYSTEM and is using the SYSTEM.

4 Simple Ways to Dramatically Boost Your Websites Profits

Lots of pretty pictures, loads of talk about the company, no testimonials, boring, waste of time product descriptions and my pet hate…Price lists…
Too many small business websites are like ‘cr*ppy brochures in the sky’, no more than self serving windows onto website designers with less marketing and business savvy than the first person out of ‘The Apprentice’.
Your website has one purpose (and you may not like this…).
To make YOU MONEY!
That’s it, no more…
Now, for that to happen it should be part of an integrated online and OFFLINE marketing campaign. YES, I said integrated online and offline…
And there also need to be some fundamental components built into your site to make it actually ‘work’.

These steps are the ‘bare bones’ but I wonder how many of them you are using??
1. Your website must be ‘findable’. That means you need to get people pre-disposed to buying your products and/or services to your site. How do you do that? Well, there are tons of ways both online and offline. For online you should be using ‘organic search engine optimisaion’ - so, if people search for ‘Foot ticklers in Timbucktoo’ you pop up. Similarly you should be using ‘pay per click’ advertising - which does a similar job but you pay a little. AND, you should be using press releases, articles, social bookmarking, forums, directories and more. What you want to happen is ANYTIME someone searches for something in any way relating to your business, YOU pop up.
2. Now, once you appear in the search listings you need to ATTRACT people’s attention and get them to go to YOUR website rather than a competitors… How do you do that? I’ll tell you on the LIVE call…
3. Once they’re at your site you should aim to do ONE thing. And ONE thing only… What is that?? CAPTURE their details! How do you get them to leave their details? Again, I’ll tell you on the LIVE call…
4. Once you have their details you need to ‘plug’ them into a multi-step marketing sequence deisgned to create a purchase. How do you do that? FOLLOW UP! how do you follow up? Aha… I’ll tell you on the LIVE call1.
That very SIMPLE system is WAY different from what most small businesses do… Most have a few pictures, a list of products, maybe a price list and if we’re really lucky a ‘weak’ offer…
That’s about as much use as a chocolate teapot!
Web marketing for your business whether ‘traditional’ or noe IS becoming more and more important (as I’m sure you know). And, best of all, there are VERY FEW small businesses who have ANY idea how to use it to attract GOOD quality clients who are ready to buy…

Two Reasons Deflation Is Good News for Small Businesses
Posted by: | CommentsFigures released today are expected to show inflation has turned negative for the first time in 50 years. Millions of public sector workers could see pay freezes as a result. But is it possible for small business owners like you to turn deflation to your advantage?
As you may know (if you’ve been around a while), I’ve LONG argued that in hard times small businesses should stop selling to the ‘masses’ and start targeting the people affected least and last - the affluent.
A key buying criteria for affluent purchasers is price and with the right marketing and delivery, small businesses can significantly raise their prices when selling to the affluent - they can ‘forget’ deflation.
Here are two fascinating new trends among affluent buyers suggesting new sales/messages, strategies way removed from deflation:
1. Excess cash to spend - because the affluent are not investing (unable to find anything they feel good about investing in), so there is a “might as well invest in myself/hobby/passion/my trip I’ve always wanted etc. Because real investing is such a ‘no-win’ gamble” attitude.
2. Reluctance to engage in conspicuous consumption likely to appear frivolous or insensitive to the ’suffering masses’. Much of affluent buying is normally driven by ego, pride, seeking of admiration or even envy, demonstrating superiority, sophistication and wealth that, in these times, the other side of the coin is a heightened fear of and sensitivity to criticism for being profligate. This opens up opportunities to sell premium priced goods and services to them that have a “good sense factor” attached to them, to make buying “feel” responsible as well as indulgent.
For the small business positioned correctly to sell to the affluent i.e. they deliberately go ‘looking’ for them, they use marketing that resonates with them and they sell premium priced products and service they will buy.
This translates to more cash purchases, and higher spend in areas that feel reasonable, responsible and prudent such as health, preventive care and family.
SO!!!
Deflation need not affect YOU IF YOU seek out affluent buyers, higher margins and much, much less competition.
