Why Facebook, Twitter and All Social Media is Useless
Posted by: | CommentsI spent this weekend at Tracey’s Mum and Dad’s house in Wiltshire.
A charming little country village.
I was up at 5am each day and Tracey’s dad Bob joined me around 6:30am.
I’d then spend about 2 hours thinking while pretending to listen as he spouted unending gossip, and anger towards various member of the village.
Once that was done he moved straight onto ‘it wasn’t like this in my day’.
‘It’s all a scam’.
‘It’s all a racket’.
‘There’s nothing free’.
‘This world is getting too bloody complicated’.
I actually kinda relish these bizarre and yet strangely enlightening rants from Bob. His generation have a HUGE amount of money waiting to be spent with me so I appreciate a little insight into how he feels.
Most of what he said was of course complete ‘ignorant’ B.S. But some of it did get me thinking.
Particularly when he started going on about Facebook and how annoyed he gets when Sarah and Tracey (Tracey is my fiancee and Sarah is here sister) sit on Facebook giggling away to themselves for hours.
I’m on his side there.
Just looking at Facebook makes me sweat with fear of addiction and endless hours wasted catching up with out-dated old mates who I got rid of in the first place because they in some way detracted from my life.
Social media like Facebook, Twitter. MySpace etc is here.
But is it all it’s cracked up to be?
And there’s always an army of rampant, ‘blinkered’ ’sheep’ hunting after the next fad that gives easy success and a fast buck.
Social media and web 2.0 has created a wonderful flock of these ‘brain washed’, impossible to distinguish, ‘cloned’ wollies. All touting social media as not only the fastest and easiest way to gain new customers but also FREE!
There can be some business benefits from social media.
BUT, in most cases for solo-entrepreneurs, small business there are MUCH better places to spend time.
Here’s the BIGGEST problem.
The idea that you can acquire clients for FREE or little has been around since the beginning of time.
And this is the main attraction with social media.
Trouble is, the FREE customers are usually the worst PLUS, they will NOT be free forever, PLUS, you cannot sidestep competition, PLUS you CANNOT make any rational, sensible decisions on how to GROW your business at any pace you desire.
It’s akin to BRAND ADVERTISING - with a TIME expense rather than a monetary one. EXCEPT, anyone can enter the game and EVERYONE is playing the same field…
Let me give you an example.
Say you want to add an additional 50 customers to your business this month.
Given the law of averages with not much testing you can do that easily as LONG as you can directly attribute your new customers to some kind of action you took.
Say you run an ad in a newspaper or magazine and then follow up with a sales process and create 10 new customers from that one mag. You know the circulation of the mag so all you need to do is test another bunch of mags with a similar readership and a total reader base of over 5 times the initial test.

But with social media like Facebook and Twitter what do you do?
Go looking for 1,000 new friends?
Sit on forums for hours?
Send out a gazillion tweets on Twitter?
There’s simply no clear, measurable correlation between the actions you take and the result.
It’s a little bit like the OLD MLM and pyramid idea. Get 2 people to get 2 to get 2 and you’ll rule the world in a jiffy. Same kinda principle. And I’m afraid FUNDAMENALLY flawed.
On top of that there is NO barrier to entry (anyone can do what you do, see what you do and copy it) and it’s more than a little difficult to create any kind of competitive advantage UNLESS you are either a ‘celebrity’ in your field already (and if not then you need to become one and that means doing different things).
However - I am NOT saying social media is useless. It isn’t. For some applications it is brilliant. And it’s power is undeniable for some things. But for any business owner or entrepreneur SERIOUS about making big leaps in profits then their are MUCH better places to spend your time.
And there’s one more dynamic to consider.
Because so much of this stuff is apparently free (and it isn’t if you place any kind of value on your time) it means there is much less competition in traditional media and many fewer people with the skills to utilise it effectively.
That IS a BIG opportunity…

How to Overcome Fear and Trigger Your Automatic Success System

It’s 5:55am (or at least it was when I started writing this) and I’m outside my beach hut in Swanage, overlooking the bay, having a little daydream.
I’ve come to think about the single biggest roadblock every business owner needs to face. FEAR.
Why?
Well, you simply cannot be successful if every time you come to the point of taking important actions you are frozen, rock solid with fear.
There are no two ways about it.
You will never succeed if most of the time you are scared witless.
That’s why I’m offering to give you actions you can take once a month to remove fear (the biggest obstacle to success) - forever.
Happily, if you can overcome fear, your success is almost automatic. It seems like the easiest thing in the world.
The two big bad fears you need to keep your eye on are:
1. Fear of success
2. Fear of failure
Good news!
You can overcome both these roadblocks to your success.
Most people don’t realise just how powerful fear of success actually is. For many it’s even more powerful than fear of failure.
Fear of success stems from negative self-image.
“Henry - stop daydreaming - don’t set your sights too high.”
“There’s no way you’ll make it.”
“Henry - you are the worst salesman we’ve ever had - you’re fired.”
In my life my parents were very supportive yet they wanted me to follow a pre-defined path. School, college, university, steady job. Without realising it, they were actually hurting me.
While at the age of 10 I would sit for hours calculating how much it would cost me to buy and own a Ferrari Testarossa right down to the cost of tyres and wiper blades - they were increasing my fears by simply trying to protect me from risk and uncertainty.
My dream was that I would never have to get up every day at 6am, travel for hours to a job I hated and then return at 8pm and be so knackered I wouldn’t be able to interact with my family. Instead, I’d be spend all day doing the things I loved while my finances remained rock solid.
But, they offered me a strong message that almost sabotaged my dreams and plans of success.
My parents responded to my stated goals by saying, “Don’t set your sights too high.”
“Instead you should get a good job, settle down, buy a house and have a family,” they said.
Of course, the last thing I wanted was to follow the ‘normal’ path. Nothing wrong with the ‘normal’ path for someone else. But it could never be for me.
However, my parents often repeated message had a major effect on me nevertheless.
Whenever I stumbled and had inevitable setbacks, the negative self-talk kicked in.
It was as though I played the same CD in my head over and over.
I’d say to myself, “Maybe everybody else is right and your parents are right. What is a little, shy, reclusive guy like me, with no special talents, with no money or contacts, doing trying to buck the ‘norm’ and achieve my dreams?”
But then I’d switch my train of thought and play a new CD that said, “Suppose everybody else and my parents are wrong - look, I’m no less worthy of achieving my goals than Richard Branson, Bill Gates or anyone for that matter!”
And thank the Lord they were!
I found a new self-talk which helped me. To enforce a positive self image I’d sit back 3 or 4 times a day (and still do), close my eyes and visualize myself in the exact successful positions I wanted.
And not just ‘business type’ things.
In my teens and early twenties I was a huge motorcycle fan (not anymore, dangerous things… It doesn’t hurt as much falling off a jetski…). At the time the world’s fastest production road bike was a Yamaha R1. I used to visualise hurtling down country lanes in Hampshire overtaking Ferraris, Porsches and leaving everything in the dust. At the age of 24 I picked up a brand new R1.
Bored with the R1 I began visualising owning a brand new Porsche cabriolet in jet black with red leather interior. I’d visualise hot sunny days and trips down to Swanage to the beach, wind in my hair the sound of the straight six echoing as I passed under bridges. At the age of 27 I picked up my first brand new Porsche.
About 18 months ago I decided to start coaching my younger brother (he’s in a wheelchair) on how he could reach the £400,000 he needs a year to live the independent life he wants. He wanted to write a book and he wanted a continuing income (he was only 16 then and had absolutely no knowledge of how to write or sell a book). I began to run ‘movies in my mind’ of him with his completed book, critical accliam and him sat at BBC promoting his book. About six weeks ago there he was sat talking live on the BBC for 30 minutes about his book (his book is entitled “How to Get the Perfect Care Package” and is the UKs first guide to navigating the social care system for people with disabilities and/or illness.)

I’ll stop there because some of my examples are truly unbelievable.
The lesson?
The best way I found to overcome fear of success is through visualizing what I wanted to happen in my life. This made it real for me.
And then taking the action necessary to bring the result into reality.
Through my imagination alone, I could see myself achieving what my critics said I could not.
To make your dreams real, imagine what achieving them would make you feel. Add to your imagination as many details of your success as possible. You’ll be thrilled to start seeing it all actually happen in your life.
Fear of success becomes impotent once you can actively visualize the outcome you want that others say can’t be done. And, of course, taking the required actions.
While fear of success can stop you cold, fear of failure is to most aspiring people even more powerful.
To begin to overcome fear of failure let’s look at it realistically.
First off… Statistics tell us most things I attempt in business will not succeed. Nor will they for you either.
Every successful person I’ve studied has experienced far more failures than successes (in took Thomas Edison 10,000 odd tries to make the lightbulb…).
Therefore a high failure rate for any achiever is as normal and predictable as any principle about nature or the universe. To succeed in a big way you simply must accept failures as part of your journey to success. Don’t worry about them, be PLEASED about them.
Would you be willing to try again and again if you knew that as long as you didn’t stop you WOULD ‘hit the big time’? If so, I can assure you of this.
You are unstoppable!
You will absolutely become a huge winner in life!
I have a number of favourite failure/success mentors. But my biggest insights have some from exposure to the biographies of famous entrepreneurs that I found in books.
The most brilliant entrepreneurs of the 20th century each had several failures before they finally succeeded.
While I’ve yet to experience and savour bankruptcy (and it wouldn’t worry me if I did because I know I can ‘do it all again’ and better), I’ve had huge chunks of regular business disappear ‘overnight’ wiping me back to zero on 3 occasions. And I learned far more from those than all my successes combined!
The most liberating thing to me about actually experiencing failure is this.
Nothing bad actually happens!
The sun rises and sets each day. Creditors who supplied you before often want to do business with you again. Many will want to extend credit.
Customers who buy from you don’t care about your previous setback as long as you satisfy their wants in your new business.
If you are an entrepreneur and over your head in debt now, keep this in mind.
You are not alone. Millions find themselves in this position.
But there is a solution!
Even if you have to start again at your beginnings.

The Darwinian principal of ’survival of the fittest’ is always good news for smarter, stronger survivors. And, the onset of recession has accelerated that process amongst small business across the UK.

How to Attract BIG Profit Increases

1. Those who shy away from marketing believing it is eith a load of ‘cobblers’, NOT for them or that they THINK that their business is different..
2. Those who realise marketing is the route to success… But, do little about.
3. Those who KNOW marketing is the fastest path to success and deliberately, wuickly, decisively take action to emply ALL the marketing methods they can as fast as possible.
Most business owners and entrepreneurs spend so much time thinking about and analysing what they should and shouldn’t do, they replace ‘Action’ with ‘Analysis.’
You can get away with this in a normal economy.
You CANNOT can’t get away with it now.
The only way to fight recession is with massive action.
So here’s a foolproof system you can use to make BIG leaps in profits NOW!
Believe me, no matter how many good ideas you have swirling around inside your head, not a one of them is worth a penny to you until you actually take action on it.
1. Make a list of your top 7 marketing ideas. These are the 7 different things you think have the best chance of working for you. Bear in mind you cannot possibly KNOW for sure until you test, so let go of any fear of “failure” you might have.
Forget “failure”. Thinks instead of “testing”. If something fails you are one step closer to something that WORKS! And this is why we test small - no more than 1000 mailed pieces to a list and only one run of an ad (and make it a small one), until we have some actual statistics on how it performs.
2. Start working on the first idea and stick with it until you’ve either completed it or you can go no further. Then move onto number 2. The 80/20 rule applies here.
For example, if you think it’s going to take you 20 hours at the keyboard to write the perfect copy for your website, the truth is you’re going to have it roughly 80% “right” after the first 4 hours.
The remaining 16 hours you work on it are largely a waste of your time, because they’re responsible for such a small return. So, decide how long you think it’s going to take you, and then whatever you’ve got after, say, 25% of the time, you run with it. Get a kitchen timer, set it, and be strict with yourself.
3. Don’t waste time working out whether something will or will not work
I can’t count the number of consulting meetings I’ve been in where I would sit around board tables with business owners and their managers and listen to hours of mass debate about whether a certain strategy I had recommended would work. Most of those companies will STILL be having the same discussion. The ONLY way you WILL know is by doing it. Do as much as you can as quickly as you can and stick with what works.
4. Don’t do things one at a time
This is the TURBO CHARGER in your success engine. STOP doing things one at a time and start doing things sequentially. So…If you have 3 things you’re going to do…Do them ALL now…Together!
That will make you so much more effective than the competition, it’s breathtaking.

Most entrepreneurs, business owners, consultant, coaches and authors get way too hooked up in how their premises look, what products and services they provide, what competitors are doing and even worse…Serving customers and clients! As the ‘captain of your ship’ the HIGHEST payoff are for you IS in the four things I describe above.
Sure, great location, staff, products are important (but I take those as read), but, you can have the best locations and products in World with the best staff and STILL go broke because you haven’t mastered the four things above…
The Secrets to ‘Killer’
Advertising and Marketing!
Now, to make your luke-warm marketing into ‘killer’ marketing there are THREE GOLDEN RULES to remember.
- 1. WHAT you are going to say.
- 2. WHO you are going to say it to.
- 3. HOW you are going to reach them.
Unfortunately most business owners start their marketing efforts by identifying MEDIA (i.e. a newspaper, letter, flyer, poster, ad, website etc, etc) and often under pressure - with an urgent need to stimulate business or a media salesman in the doorway screaming about a deadline.
A lot of bad marketing decisions and a lot of bad marketing happens this way. So we’ll approach this a bit differently and start by thinking about what you have to say (that might be interesting!) before we worry about how you will say it. So, let’s start with MESSAGE.
Three Choices: No Message,
Wrong Message, Right Message!
A lot of advertising and marketing messages are really No Messages at all.
They’re just “business cards.” Name, rank and serial number. Who we are, what we do, where we are. I say this is NO MESSAGE, because it lacks DIFFERENTIATION and it lacks REASON TO RESPOND NOW.
Then there are Wrong Messages. These are boring and plain vanilla, “me-too-ish,” cheapest price as only lure, or focused on your product or service instead of customers and their needs, desires and interests. These also typically lack DIFFERENTIATION and REASON TO RESPOND NOW.
The worst reason to advertise is your need for customers. The best reason is having something exciting, bold, interesting, DIFFERENT (and differentiating) to say, structured to produce immediate response. I can get you moving toward this kind of RIGHT MESSAGE by posing the single most important (tough!) question anybody will ever ask you about your business as long as you’re in it… Here’s the Question:
“Why should your prospective client, choose to do business with you vs. any and every other option available to them?”
And a catchy slogan is NOT a sufficient answer. Developing a really clear, strong, compelling answer isn’t necessarily easy or instant. It tends to evolve. But it can be a huge breakthrough worth millions. Think: “fresh, hot pizza delivered in 30 minutes or less, guaranteed” (DominosTM). OR, “You’ll Feel Like a Million Pounds Within One Hour or Your Teeth Whitening is FREE!” They both happen to rely on time-specific guarantees - a good path to a USP but, by far, not the only one. You will learn much more about USP and related message devices’ as you continue with us as a Member (Grab Your FREE Gift), and you’ll be able to “borrow from” or be inspired by the examples to continually improve and strengthen your own Best Marketing Message. T
his is an EVOLUTIONARY PROCESS OF CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT, and many of our Members can show you truly awful Messages replaced again and again and again, over months and years, with better and better Messages. The second biggest message issue’ you will see hammered home in my ‘KILLER’ SUCCESS SECRETS LETTER and our other resources coming your way is: direct-response OFFERS.
This kind of advertising is the polar opposite of the brand/image advertising you see most big, dumb corporations doing - and the worst move you could ever make is copying them!
We teach you to establish a process by which your ideal prospective customers/clients raise their hands and identify themselves by requesting widgets’ (like free information, reports, etc.) from you, take baby steps’ toward you…and let you follow-up with them effectively. This combines classic lead generation advertising’; something called permission marketing’, and effective multi-step, multi-media follow-up to develop the new customer. Somewhere between the crash and the hasty government survival plans and the jobs report showing 40,000 jobs evaporated in one month, a 38 year old trader and real estate investor rounded up a group of his buddies and took them on a “buddy trip” by private helicopter and Hummer limos; to VIP accommodation; and a game of ‘extreme adventure paintball” organised by a bunch of entrepreneurs.
He isn’t as weird as he sounds.
In fact, SELLERS TO THE RICH AND SUPER RICH REPORT A “PROFOUND EAGERNESS TO KEEP SPENDING” on the part of those hit by investment losses they wish to view as temporary, as a reinforcement of their personal belief system and status - doing so emphasises their sense of superiority over the masses.
The Times reported on spending for lavish holiday parties in and around London unabated… on a high-end real estate real estate buying boom fuelled by discounting: in 07, few properties priced above £5mill sold, in ‘08 the buyers were out in force… and a number of record prices were achieved at art auctions this year. And one persons thoughts about money being thrown away are another’s idea of justice… The RICH ARE SPENDING (and a lot more than you or I need)…
I’M OFTEN ASKED THE ‘BU HOW DO WE FIND THE RICH?’ QUESTION. My top advertising strategy has always been ‘follow the leader’, follow a successful advertiser who has already found the prospects you want.
Look for magazines, journals, and newspapers where the rich go… It’s not that difficult. What may be more so is YOUR belief that YOU can create enough value from the products and services you offer, enough interest, the right environment for those RICH people to WANT to buy from you.
That’s another discussion - a certain level of transformation - something I will be revealing to those who’ve requested details of my Quantum Leap program (and this is a BIG deal).
Here’s the key. To become magnetically attractive to the RICH and SUPER-RICH (I can’t make the key to recession survival any more obvious! I must have put those words in CAPITALS 10 time) you have to create an EXPERIENCE - something for them to ‘brag’ about.

HIGH PRICE will work in YOUR favour IF you market to the correct audience in the correct way. Do you think it really cost 10 times as much to make the £5 teabags as it does to make a box of PGTips? Of course not.
There are LOTS of VERY good reasons to sell to the affluent.
However, as per the interview I did with 2CR radio this week, most businesses are slashing as much off their prices as they possibly can in a desperate, futile attempt to boost cash flow and attract shoppers away from competition.
YES, sales can sometimes help and YES they are sometime necessary. BUT, an IDIOT can cut their price in half and see a short term boost in sales (not necessarily a boost in profits).
But MARK MY WORDS, a lot of the shops you bought the reduced priced presents from WILL go the way of Woolworths early next year.
The time has passed for sale, lacklustre customer service, a lack of ideas, poor execution, feeble attempts to do something different.
You CAN position your company to GROW next year.
The question is WILL YOU grab the ‘bull by the horns’ and make it happen?
